FIGHT HUNGER THIS SEPTEMBER WITH GIANT AND MARTIN’S
Variety of activities underway throughout Hunger Action Month™ to help feed families in local communities
Carlisle, PA – Nearly 49 million in the United States or 1 in 6 people face hunger. In recognition of Hunger Action Month™ in September, GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets are asking customers and associates to join them in hunger relief efforts to benefit regional food banks and local food pantries in the communities they serve. “Members of our local community and their families are fighting hunger each and every day and as a supermarket, we try to provide as much product and resources as we can to feed those in need,” said Christopher Brand, public and community relations manager. “While September is Hunger Action Month, it’s important that all of us continue to support our local food banks throughout the year with monetary and product donations or volunteering time to help serve at a soup kitchen or stock a food pantry.”
September 2 through 15 is GIANT and MARTIN’S annual Bag Hunger in-store fall campaign where customers have an opportunity to donate $1 at the checkout to benefit their local food bank. Earlier this spring, GIANT/MARTIN’S customers donated a record $537,672 to regional food banks and hope to double that donation this fall.
For the fall Bag Hunger campaign, GIANT/MARTIN’S will be partnering with a couple of vendors to thank customers for supporting the cause. From September 2 to September 8, donate to the Bag Hunger campaign and receive a coupon booklet from Unilever with over $10 in savings and delicious recipes from brands such as Wishbone, Ragu, Lipton, Suave, Hellman’s, Skippy and more! When customers donate from September 9 – September 15, they will receive a coupon booklet from Kraft worth $10.
Unilever is also launching an in-store “Buy, Get, Give” promotion. Customers who purchase $15 of select Unilever items between 9/2 and 9/8 will receive $4 in savings and Unilever will give 8 meals to families in need through Feeding America® and its local member food banks. Together, GIANT and MARTIN’s and Unilever will help donate more than 1 million meals to Feeding America on behalf of local food banks. For every one dollar donated, Feeding America is able to help provide eight meals on behalf of local food banks. The monetary equivalent of 1.2 million meals will be donated.
In partnership with Unilever, GIANT is hosting two Stuff-A-Truck events in the Philadelphia community. Help support Philabundance by donating canned and non¬perishable food items in support of Hunger Action Month on September 8 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the St. Davids GIANT at 550 E. Lancaster Avenue or the GIANT located at 2550 Grant Avenue in Philadelphia.
To complement its Bag Hunger campaign, GIANT and MARTIN’S Facebook pages, found at facebook.com/giantfoodstores and facebook.com/martinsfoods, will feature hunger facts and information about the specific food banks the companies regularly support throughout the month. Fans of the Facebook pages are also encouraged to change their cover photo to support Hunger Action Month. GIANT and MARTIN’S programs and food drives have raised millions of dollars for hunger relief over the years. In 2011, GIANT and MARTIN’S donated more than $6.9 million in customer, vendor, product and corporate donations to nearly 100 regional food banks, local pantries and soup kitchens across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
