GREATER BERKS FOOD BANK RECEIVES 225 TURKEYS AND $1,500 FROM GIANT FOOD STORES’ FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS EVERYDAY CAMPAIGN Nearly $90,000 in turkeys and cash donated in three states
Carlisle, PA – GIANT Food Stores’ “Feeding Our Neighbors Everyday” holiday campaign supported the Greater Berks Food Bank’s annual turkey drive by donating 225 turkeys and $1,500 to the food bank to use to purchase food when it needs it most, after the holidays.
“While food banks receive increased donations during the holiday season, these donations tend to slow down early in the New Year, even though the need doesn’t,” said Tom Lenkevich, GIANT president. “Feeding our neighbors every day is part of GIANT’s mission, but we can’t do it alone, and we need your help to end hunger in Berks, Schuylkill and western Montgomery Counties.”
“The last couple years, our turkey donations at Thanksgiving fell short of the demand from the agencies we supply,” said Peg Bianca, executive director, Greater Berks Food Bank. “This year’s donation from GIANT Food Stores will go a long way in meeting this need and making sure local families in need have a turkey to place on their Thanksgiving table. On behalf of those we serve, thank you GIANT!”
According to Greater Berks Food Bank, the donation of 225 turkeys can help feed more than 1,000 individuals.
As part of GIANT’s Feeding Our Neighbors holiday campaign, nearly $90,000 in turkeys and cash were donated to eight regional food banks and local hunger organizations throughout three states.
In addition to Greater Berks Food Bank, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley, FeedMore – Central Virginia Food Bank, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, and Maryland Food Bank – Western Branch and Lancaster County Council of Churches will receive donations.
GIANT shoppers can help by donating their Free Turkey Extra Reward certificates at the register to Greater Berks Food Bank. Customers who earned 400 extra reward points through Nov. 12 are eligible for the Free Turkey Extra Reward certificate which can be donated now through Nov. 25.
